Case Study Detail

For any organization, part of living in the digital age is understanding that both corporate and private information is more vulnerable than it’s ever been before. Almost daily, cyberattacks make their way into the headlines and impact high-profile companies in the entertainment, consumer goods, credit reporting, automotive, healthcare and educational fields, as well as in local, state and federal government agencies.

And cyberattacks don’t just target large, global organizations. The fact is that 43 percent of cyberattacks target small business, and 60 percent of small companies go out of business within six months after a cyberattack.

Just when you think you’ve got a handle on your cyber security, a combination of dedicated hackers (with nothing else to do in their spare time but try to undermine your business), outdated technology and ever-present human error create the perfect storm to potentially make your company the next day’s most-talked-about security breach.

Which is why an international manufacturer based in the Midwest turned to Care Security Systems to help save the day in an immediate cyber security crisis.

Cyberattack 911

The challenge for many organizations is having aging legacy systems and incorporating them into newer systems. Even in the most secure environments, it’s easy for hackers to find cracks in the infrastructure. Because a company’s cyber security can often only be as good as what you had just a few hours ago.

As a result, it’s important to have an experienced, hands-on integrator who is continuously connected to the technology and security world. And who is available 24/7 to help resolve any cyber security issues.

“We’ve worked with this organization for years on customized physical and cyber security solutions for their locations throughout the United States,” says Jon Kron, Care Security Systems project manager. “At the 11th hour, they came to us with an emergency – their enterprise computer infrastructure had been hacked. And proprietary company information, financials, customer and vendor accounts could possibly have been vulnerable to exploitation.”

In this instance, the cyber invaders took down the video servers for the manufacturer’s North American sites, completely severing the network connections. These servers were central to the organization’s video and security reporting. With millions of dollars of inventory at stake – not to mention the confidential information of customers and suppliers, there was no time to waste in bringing all the manufacturer’s security systems into full operation.

Rising to the Crisis

The first step for Care Security Systems and the manufacturer was to take a close look at what had been hacked and what types of information may have been compromised. The second step was to review pre-arranged protocols. Just like companies prep for a crisis communications event – a natural disaster or a product recall – the manufacturer and Care Security Systems had developed guidelines to react in the face of a security event.

“We help organizations become aware of the cyber risks because knowledge is power,” says Renee Schwab, Chief Executive Officer of Care Security Services. “When you learn more about the risks, it can be much easier to protect your business from hackers, viruses and malware.”

Thanks to the extensive pre-planning between the manufacturer and Care Security Systems for such an event, the team was able to bring the system quickly back up within two days. “Considering that other security firms wouldn’t be able to get most organizations up and running for weeks, it was a pretty seamless operation,” notes Kron. “Our experienced team of cyber security experts and technicians worked around the clock and it paid off. The manufacturer’s customers and vendors did not sustain any losses.” This can-do attitude – combined with more than 30 years of security experience – is what makes Care Security Systems a long-term partner for so many leading organizations.
