Case Study Detail

Security is a major concern for any public institution, but hospitals and other medical facilities present unique challenges. Beyond the ethical responsibility to keep patients and staff safe, the abundance of expensive medical equipment and Schedule I and II drugs also puts medical facilities at a heightened risk of theft, whether its pre-planned or a simple act of opportunism. Add in exposure to highly HIPAA-regulated patient records, and a medical facility can be a security minefield.

Despite this risk, hospital security must sit alongside another equally important priority for healthcare facilities: the need for a friendly, calming and open design that makes patients and visitors feel at ease. These two concerns often make it difficult to engineer a robust, yet unobtrusive, security solution.

As one of the largest long-term care, behavioral health care, substance abuse treatment and acute care centers in New Jersey – and the fourth largest in the United States – ensuring the highest levels of security was key. Which is why the 1,070-bed hospital facility turned to Care Security Systems for a solid security solution.

Updating an Aging System

The medical center had been looking to upgrade their original security system and learned about Care Security Systems at a security trade show. “We were invited to a site visit,” says Ed Spitzbarth, Care Security Systems project manager. “Once Care Security Systems was on site and talking with the client, it was evident that they needed help. Their video and card access systems were in disarray and far from being in optimal operating condition. They needed a security firm who could straighten things out and redesign their systems so that they were functioning correctly.”

Care Security Systems developed an enterprise-level solution that included new, technologically advanced monitoring cameras and access control panels.

During the upgrade, Care Security Systems made sure to make the process as seamless as possible. “Our experienced technicians and security designers have worked in multiple health care facilities,” explains Renee Schwab, Care Security Systems’ Chief Executive Officer. “We understand the requirements, as well as the highly sensitive nature of the security need. At the cornerstone of every Care Security Systems project is taking care of all the details to avoid disruption of existing operations.”
