Care Security Systems Electrifies Security for Major Metropolitan Utility Provider
Each day, 10 million people who live and work in New York City and Westchester County depend on their utility company to provide electric, gas and steam service. Founded in 1823, this major metropolitan utility now operates one of the world’s largest energy delivery systems. The company is constantly looking toward the future and exploring ways to innovate and take advantage of developing technologies.
One of these ways is to regularly review and upgrade the systems’ network of tunnels and substations to ensure that the utility’s mission-critical services are always available – and always secure. According to Utility Dive’s 2017 State of the Electric Utility Survey, more than 600 utility professionals named cyber and physical security the most pressing concern for their companies, with 72% saying it is either “important” or “very important.”
Which is why, since 2011, the utility giant has turned to Care Security Systems for reliable, cutting-edge security solutions.
A Tunnel Infrastructure Commitment
The company’s 2017 Annual Report states, “We will continue to invest in our core electric, gas and steam systems, as they are critical to the integration of new technologies. The $1 billion we spent to fortify our systems against extreme weather is paying off, preventing more than a quarter million customer outages since 2014.”
A significant part of this infrastructure commitment was contracting Care Security Systems to install cameras throughout the five tunnels that connect to the various New York City boroughs.
It’s a very hazardous environment consisting of gas pipes that run throughout a complicated underground network. And the utility must constantly monitor for gas leaks and sump flooding via unfailing conduit cable and cameras. During Hurricane Sandy, several of the tunnels did flood, adding to the complexity of restoring utility services to an already devastated area.
“Unlike a standard cable-camera set-up, these new conduit cables needed to have an explosion-proof, PVC-coated galvanized steel with a Class 1, Division 2 rating,” explains Eli Ribowsky, Care Security System Project Manager. “Plus, the cameras required custom-made enclosures – each with four mounts and weighing 100 pounds. This was definitely not a standardized solution.”
As a major municipal utility that grants multi-million-dollar contracts, it was important that Care Security Systems had the consultative, design, technology, installation and service expertise. Care Security Systems also holds key security manufacturer certifications to consistently stay up-to-date with the latest technologies.
